Athletes on the Rise: Christina Wellen’s Journey from Walk-On to D1 Starter
Some athletes are born with natural talent. Others rise through pure determination. Christina Wellen is the kind of athlete who proves that grit, heart, and relentless work ethic can take you farther than you ever imagined.
Christina’s journey didn’t begin with a long list of scholarship offers. In fact, she was under-recruited out of high school. But that never stopped her. She walked on to the University of Florida softball team—one of the most competitive programs in the country. That decision alone speaks volumes about her belief in herself.
After spending time with the Gators, Christina transferred to UNC Charlotte, where her perseverance paid off. She didn’t just make the roster—she made a name for herself. Through early mornings, long practices, and the grind that comes with D1 athletics, Christina showed what it means to earn your place every single day.
Her path has had its share of ups and downs. But no matter the challenge, Christina remained a beacon of resilience. Her story reminds us that success isn’t always about where you start—it’s about how far you’re willing to go.
“Softball is a part of my life. It’s a part of who I am. It’s taught me a lot about failure and perseverance. But it’s not who I am as a person,” said Wellen. “It’s fleeting—and that’s something you have to reconcile with.”
Now, as a recent graduate, Christina is setting her sights on a career in accounting. And while she may be stepping off the field, the mark she’s left behind is undeniable. She’s not only inspired her teammates—she’s inspired all of us at NOVUS.
To us, Christina embodies the spirit of a NOVUS athlete: purpose-driven, passionate, and persistent. She’s proof that you don’t need a spotlight to shine—you just need a reason to rise.
